Mark 8:31-38

This is a pivotal moment in the gospels. Jesus is showing His disciples that His Kingdom will come by way of being a suffering servant. He is beginning to speak with His disciples about His coming death. When Peter pushes back, Jesus gives a harsh rebuke; “Get away from me, Satan!” (8:33 NLT). Then Jesus delivers the even harder news that if His disciples want to follow Him; they must also take up their cross. It’s hard for them to hear Jesus talk about His upcoming suffering, and even harder for them to hear Him ask them to participate as well. But the truth of the matter is, suffering is the only thing that Jesus has promised us on this side of His Kingdom. The hope that the momentary pain of the suffering in this life will seem almost non-existent compared to the glory and beauty of what’s to come.

Do you feel like you’ve ever truly suffered for the sake of the Gospel?

Can you think of a time where you felt like you were trying to do something for the Kingdom, but now looking back you feel like Jesus’ response to you might have been, “Get away from me, Satan”?
